The Train...of awesome

Journal Entry 117

We began our expedition on the night of 1 September 2011. Our group boarded a tram that would take us to a ferry that would take us to a train that would take us to a bus that would eventually take us to CAPPADOCIA! The first night of our trip was on a train bound for Ankara. Carlos and I shared a room that was small but comfortable, and the trip on the train was a fun experience. Everyone had fun crowding into a small room to watch a movie and bond while Carlos and I decided to sleep. We slept quite well.

We arrived in Ankara early in the morning and took a bus to Konya. Konya was a bit of a boring city with the exception of a few unique museums that displayed Seljuk art, a museum/mausoleum dedicated to the founder of Sufism, and some unique looking older mosques that were built before the common dome in most mosques was implemented. The hotel we stayed in was nice, and the city was a good resting point before continuing our journey on the bus to Cappadocia.

I was half asleep on the bus when we decided to stop at an ancient caravanserai. Inside it had a great hall with large stone pillars, and in the center of the complex was some sort of tower. There were four watchful guard dogs in the complex that closely observed us while sleeping and turning over in want of a belly rub when we passed.

As we drove over a hill, ancient caves built into the rocks by people became visible. At one point we could see a beautiful valley with dwellings built into the sides of its cliffs. This was the sign that we had arrived. The bus took us to our hotel, and everyone immediately decided that it was time to utilize the hotel's pool and have fun and bond. Carlos and I decided it was time to take a nap. We slept quite well.
